CHALLENGES With 30 years of entrepreneurial experience under his belt, Schneider easily can reflect on the challenges brought up in the early years of his first venture. His first challenge was securing the initial investment for his starting-up the business. Change Theorists The theories of change are a definition of the building blocks that are needed to be able to achieve a long-term goal. Many theories currently exist that explain effective ways of conducting change. Most of these theories are drawn from leadership aspects and change management guru J. P. Kotter, usually known as potters theory of change. According to Kotters entrepreneurial magazine, all the process models are extracted from the model of organizational transformation by Kurt P Lewis. The third traditional change model has been described by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and is known as the change curve. Kotter's 8-Step Change Model Whether one is considering a small change to any processes, or a deep shift in a system, it is normal to feel uneasy and also intimidated by the challenges one will be meeting. Kotter has eight-step change process model that can make one at ease and go through the challenges on the way.The first step in the process is the creation of urgency (Kotter, 2012). Change needs to happen, and it is necessary for the people around the company to appreciate that it is going to happen. As such, it is advisable to make everyone aware of why the change is necessary and why it should be done immediately. This will assist in sparking the initial motivation that will help in getting things moving. Kotter's models suggest that there should be an open communication about the current situation in the market place and with the companys competitive state (Kotter, 2002). The moment people will critique the change that has been proposed; the urgency can be built and will feed on itself. The next step is forming a strong coalition by convincing people that the change is significant. It usually takes a strong leadership and visible support from most important people in the organization. Kotter points out that managing the change is not the key element and that one has to lead it. Effective change agents can be found within the company, and it is not necessary that they follow the traditional hierarchy of the firm. Leading a change needs one to bring together a coalition of people with influence who has powers from different sources. Once the team is formed, it is required to work to carry on with building the urgency and the urgency surrounding the need for the change (Kotter, 2006). This is creating a vision for the change. The initial time when thinking of change, there may be excellent ideas and solutions that will be rotating around these ideas are to be linked to an entire vision that can easily be understood and remembered. Clear visions help everyone to understand the reason why they are being asked to do something. When they see for themselves the ideas you are trying to achieve, then the orders given to them will be making a lot of sense. Forth, there is a need to communicate a vision as whatever the vision does after being defined will determine the success of the business. The message could have strong competition from other daily competitions within the company, and as such, it needs to be communicated in a frequent and powerful manner (Sabri, Gupta, Beitler, 2007). Five, one has to remove all the obstacles on the way as following all the steps, it is normal that there might be resistance from a portion of the staff. There needs to structure pit in place for the change and continuous checks for barriers to it. Removing the obstacles can empower the people that are expected to execute the vision and will help in making the change move forward. Step six is the creation of short-term wins. It is clear that nothing is more motivating than the success and as such, the company should be given a taste of victory earlier in the change process. There should be a follow-up on the achievements made, and employees should be recognized and rewarded. Seven is never to let up. There should be a use of high credibility to transform systems structures and policies that are not in line with the vision. The last step is to incorporate the change into the culture. To be able to make the change stick, it should become part of the culture of the company. The culture is always the determinant of what is done, and as such, behind the values, the visions should display the daily work (Biech, 2007). Lewin's 3-Stage Model of Change According to Lewins, the motivation for change must be generated before the process of change is conducted. One should be helped to re-examine the many assumptions that have been cherished about the relation that one has with other people. Lewis models are as below; Unfreeze is the initial stage of the change that entails the control of the organization to appreciate that the change that has been proposed is needed and it also includes breaking down the current status of the quo before developing new ways of operations (Burke,Lake Paine, 2009). The main aspect in this step is to develop a compelling message that shows why the current system should stop. Preparing an effective organization demands to begin at its core by challenging the beliefs and values as well as the behavior that is currently defining the company (Leonard McGuire, 2007). Change- is the second step of the process and is where the people start resolving the uncertainty and find other ways of doing something (Dormant Lee, 2011). People begin to know and act in a manner supporting new directions. The shift from unfreezing to change consumes time as there is a lot of time taken to give in to the new direction and proactively engage in the change (Offredy Vickers, 2010). Refreeze is the third and last step in Lewin's model. When the changes are developing the desired shape and the people have appreciated the new system, the organization will be ready to refreeze. The signs of refreezing include stable organizational charts, consistent job description among others (Dievernich, TokarskiGong,2014). The Change Curve It is a popular and powerful model that is used to enhance the understanding of the staged through personal and organizational transition and helps one to predict how to react to change to be able to make own transitions and ensure they have the help and support required. It is based on a model that was originally developed in the 60s to explain the grieving process (Wright,2009). The first stage is the status quo where there is the introduction to change associated with frequent communication as it is a critical stage for communication. It is as well where the reaction to the challenging status quo is done. Stage two is the disruption where reality sets in, and there may be change resistance where there are unnecessary fears for the expected negative consequences. To react to this, there need to be plans and careful preparations, and there should be considerations of the impacts and objections that people may have (Saraf, 2006). Step 3 is the exploration stage where pessimism and the resistance are to pave the way to optimism and acceptance. There is acceptance of change and what was lost is left to go. In reaction to this, there should be the provision of support and training as well as offering early opportunities to experience the results of the change. The fourth and last stage are rebuilding where there are expectations of accepting and embracing the changes as well as reconstruct the ways of working. This can be accomplished by tracking the benefits and record the lessons learned (Leopold Kaltenecker, 2015). The issue of education, population control will improve both the economic growth and standards of living in the long run (World Economic Forum). Another very crucial thing is and that we in the world today cannot do without is the fact that of the machineries invention and innovation. This was not in the past, but today it has actually improved our majority standards of living. It is a fact that even the poor man at least can afford some kind of machinery for instance he or she may not afford a television set but may afford a small radio of about three dollars. This is because it is extremely important to listen to and know what is going on in the world through that small radio an issue that was not there in the past though people at that time were still comfortable because these machineries were not there. This hence is seen that economic growth is vats and can accommodate everyone. This means that despite the economic growth, there are still some cheap commodities that can be afforded by the low level people so as to enjoy their lives. Not everyone has a professional duty like teaching; nursing, etc yet even the non professional people must live and enjoy their lives. By doing their non-professional duties, they also actively participate in economic growth. On the other side of the economic growth, which is also to a lesser extent, I see its further expansions to be unnecessary and especially when its undesirable effects are considered from a true ââ¬â cost perspective rather than form a true ââ¬â benefit perspective (World Economic Forum). As I have discussed in the previous paragraphs, everyone cannot be the same in terms of gifts and talents, in brain, strength, authority and understanding. There must be both low and high level people. This also applies in the standard of living which is determined by the economic growth. For sure it is true that it affects people differently. In the real world, today, this economic growth has made the rich richer and the poor poorer. This hence has made the poor group to look at economic growth as an enemy. This is mainly because the poor have not been given a chance to enjoy the changes that come with economic growth. For instance, most of the poor people are not computer literates hence when employment opportunities come up, the first requirement is computer literacy which completely excludes them from the race even when one had the potential of doing that job. These computer courses are mainly provided in the schools of the rich (International Chamber of Commerce, Business charter for sustainable Development, 1990). Economic growth has been accompanied by a lot of bureaucracy. The rich people have taken the top levels and the poor people the low levels. It becomes very difficult for the one at the bottom to reach the one at the top. Before one reaches to the top from the bottom he or she must have used a lot of time, some little finances so as to get favours fro above. Those favours mainly may not be there because the ones at the top always are interested in doing things that favour and benefit them especially when it comes to finances thus rendering the poor back to or get stuck in poor living standards (World commission for Environment and development, 1987). When it comes to distribution of resources, it is clearly seen that some regions in countries are not considered or given priorities. This then instead of improving their standards of living through economic growth, they continue to deteriorate. A good example is usually when the politicians especially the presidents in the third world countries who give priorities to their regions of origin neglecting the other regions. This is even worse when a certain region has got no representative in the government hence making them curse the economic growth (World Economic Forum). Our Day Out by Willy Russell For our second module, we looked at the study of the play ââ¬ËOur Day Outââ¬â¢ by Willy Russell. The play is about a special needs class from Liverpool going on a day out to Wales, and the different dilemmas they put their teachers Mr. Briggs and Mrs. Kay through (like stealing animals from a zoo). We had to choose three key moments that we thought were the most important sections from the play and where we thought drama was built around. For us, the key characters in the story are Mr. Briggs, a strict teacher Mrs. Kay, a gentler teacher, and Carol, a quiet pupil in the special needs class. We used different explorative strategies whilst developing and performing our drama. This essay is the response to the play. Our first key moment that we chose was a conversation between the headmistress and Mr. Briggs. We thought this was a key moment because it showed a drop in Mr. Briggsââ¬â¢ status. We got to this conclusion after a group discussion. We decided to hot seat the characters in order to develop them. We wanted to find out how Mr. Briggs really felt about not having the total authority. Mr. Briggs developed into a strict disciplinarian who disliked most people. However Mrs. Kay developed into a sweet motherly type teacher. Our second key moment was Mrs. Kay defending herself and answering back during a disagreement with Mr. Briggs. We decided this was a key moment because it let us show a completely different side to Mrs. Kay. We used thought-tracking so we could show the audience Mrs. Kayââ¬â¢s real anger. However the actor playing Mrs. Briggs found it difficult to adapt to the change in character. To help her and the drama out, we used the explorative strategy forum theatre so w... ...ned her status. Mr. Briggs responded by seeming to shrink so there was an apparent change in status. Our final key moment was marked by an aside by Mr. Briggs. The final key moment shows Mr. Briggs destroying the film after the day out. We showed him destroying the film as an aside so that the audience knew something that the characters didnââ¬â¢t: Dramatic Irony. There was no dialogue during the aside which made it much more effective. The aside also suggested that Mr. Briggs didnââ¬â¢t change at all and that it was all an act. It developed the audienceââ¬â¢s dislike of Briggs even more. Mr. Briggs however, regained his status once again as he was the only character left on stage and he was centre stage so all eyes were on him. Overall I think our key moments were accurate and the explorative strategies we used helped us develop our characters and our drama.

As young Americans living in the 21st century, we have many options when it comes to what we want to do after we graduate high school. Many choose to go to college and earn a degree while others choose to go straight to work or join the military. While all are very good choices for the young men and women who choose each path, some might be more rewarding than others. Earning a degree is something I think all young adults should do regardless of which path they choose; it brings much more economic security, many more job opportunities, and, in most cases, a broader understanding of the world and how it works. One of the first major reasons for my believing this is the economic benefits of the college degree. Well in todayââ¬â¢s society itââ¬â¢s practically a requirement and the trend seems to only be growing. If this is the case, wouldnââ¬â¢t you want to arm yourself with as much education and prowess before meeting with employers who wonââ¬â¢t consider your application if you do not have a degree attached to it? The answer is yes, you are more likely to get a job over someone if you have a degree and they do not. There is a correlation between jobs and degrees, and the article ââ¬Å"Help Wanted: Projecting Jobs and Education Requirements through 2018â⬠(Arabia 2000, 2010) indicates that this relation is growing closer and even estimates that 63% of all jobs will require some type of post-secondary degree by the year 2018. As you can see, there is substantial evidence leaning towards employers needing a degree, specifically the ones that will allow you to live in a comfortable middle-class lifestyle. Instead of exercising the appropriate mental muscles, weââ¬â¢re allowing ourselves to become a nation of nitwits, obsessed with the comings and goings of Lindsay Lohan and increasingly oblivious to crucially important societal issues that are all but screaming for attention. What should we be doing about the legions of jobless Americans, the deteriorating public schools, the debilitating wars, the scandalous economic inequality, the corporate hold on governmental affairs, the commercialization of the arts, the deficits? â⬠(Guelph Mercury (ON, 2010) this seems rather harsh, but it speaks some truth. There seems to be a lot of Americans these days not contributing anything but TV ratings to society. Going to college is a unique experience in its own, going off on your own, being independent and everything that comes with it. But what about the education you are receiving, when you receive a college education you receive the social responsibility as a global citizen to help us advance as a society. Through your college experiences you are obtaining the tools to go out and change the world, to be a responsible global citizen and to change the way things are going in this country. By not obtaining higher education you are sitting by and watching as the world zooms passed and doesnââ¬â¢t even glance your way. For those who choose to go to work or the military instead of college first, there are still options for you to earn a degree and become successful and earn a higher pay and better job. If you attended a career center and decided to go straight to work, you can and should pursue a degree in the field that you trained in, some jobs might even pay for you to go and getting more training in order to have you as a strong asset in the future. Other companies might even pay towards your student loans after graduating college. New Hampshire has a program called ââ¬Å"Stay Work Playâ⬠(Work-Life Newsbrief & Trend Report, 2009) that uses incentives for companies to keep jobs in the state by paying $8,000 towards your college loans and get you to work for them. As for the military, you have the option to go to college for free. The GI Bill of Rights (FDCH Congressional Testimony, 2010) was created at the end of World War II and contains a provision to help pay for servicemen and women to attend college. This give you the option to earn a degree and still serve your country, and get a high pay and maybe earn a higher status in the military by having a degree that helps you perform a job for them. There are thousands of opportunities awaiting you when you start your journey after earning a high school diploma, as you can see. Living in this current economy is not a fun experience and the more money you can make helps not only you but it helps the economy start to thrive again. You have the opportunity to prove the nay-sayers in the world wrong, and help change the world and become an effective global citizen. For those who donââ¬â¢t think they should earn a degree or think they canââ¬â¢t because they chose to go into the military or work, you can still do it! In this day and age we all need an edge in order to get anywhere and succeed, empower yourself to become the successful young man or woman you know you can be and get a degree.

CTL Brainstorming Day 2013 On November 1, 2013, more than 150 career professionals from 6 countries met for the annual Career Thought Leadersââ¬â¢ Global Career Brainstorming Day to discuss best practices, innovations, trends, and other factors currently impacting global job search and career management. I am pleased to write about their findings, just as I have for the last 3 years! Resumes are not dead! Even if you get your foot in the door with LinkedIn or an Executive Bio, your resume will still be a key part of your job search process. You absolutely must show a recruiter, in no uncertain terms, how you will solve their client companiesââ¬â¢ problems. And youââ¬â¢ll need to make your great impression in not 15 or 20 seconds, but six (6)!! Here are the top 10 takeaways Iââ¬â¢d like to share for resumes in 2014: Focus on your most current position. Many people reading resumes do not even look past that first position, so capture their attention right away! Remember that many recruiters are reading resumes on their phones, so make them mobile-friendly (there are applications available to create mobile-friendly resumes). Go for succinctness and clarity of direction, especially in your personal branding. Less is more. That means no 5-6-line summary paragraphs! Include quotes/testimonials on your resume ââ¬â these tidbits are even easier to collect now that LinkedIn recommendations are so commonly given. Create multiple versions of your resume ââ¬â for email, mobile, social media profiles, and yes, one on paper for networking and interviews. In most cases, keep your resume to 1-2 pages. Of course there are exceptions to this rule. In Europe, you may still include a photo, birth date and information about your familial relationships on your resume (Do NOT do this in the U.S., the U.K. or Australia). Generally, the U.S.-style ââ¬Å"multinationalâ⬠resume is becoming the norm. Be sure to have an ATS-friendly resume available for on-line applications. You might want one resume that works for both humans and ATS systems, or you might choose a format that works for both. Consider creating an infographic resume, which is a rising trend. Twitter resumes, video clips and other multi-media presentations will also make you stand out from the competition. Snail mailing a resume can make a good impression! Do it in addition to emailing and submitting on line! Donââ¬â¢t be afraid to include hyperlinks on your resume. This is a great way to keep things concise while offering a portal into the depth of your experience. More and more, resumes are becoming an aggregation of social media, with less content in the resume itself. Wondering about LinkedIn? LinkedIn profiles are a complement to your resume, not a carbon copy. LinkedIn provides an opportunity to be more personal and engaging. The current atmosphere of fear of diseases attributed to harmful chemicals best explains why there has been a recent increase in the demand for organic food and materials. There had been studies relating certain diseases like cancer to the harmful chemicals produced industrially. People are shedding out extra dollars just to be able to purchase food that is absolutely safe for consumption and this is correlated with eating only organically produced nourishment. There are little to no known legislation or policies regarding the use of insecticides and this is still yet to be fully addressed.

Product Life Cycle Essay Definition: Products come and go. A companyââ¬â¢s challenge is to hold on to its customers longer than it holds on to its products. It needs to watch the market life cycle and the customer life cycle more than the product life cycle. Someone at Ford realized this: ââ¬Å"If weââ¬â¢re not customer driven, our cars wonââ¬â¢t be either.â⬠One selects marketing tools that are appropriate to the stage of the productââ¬â¢s life cycle. For example, advertising and publicity will produce the biggest payoff in the introduction stage of a product; their job is to build consumer awareness and interest. Sales promotions and personal selling grow more important during a productââ¬â¢s maturity stage. Personal selling can strengthen customersââ¬â¢ comprehension of your productââ¬â¢s advantages and their conviction that the offering is worthwhile. Product Development and Life-Cycle Strategies: In the face of changing customer needs, technologies and competition, product innovation or the development of new products has become vital to a companys survival. Introducing new products, however, is not sufficient. The firm must also know how to manage the new product as it goes through its life cycle: that is, from its birth, through growth and maturity, to eventual demise as newer products come along that better serve consumer needs. This product life cycle presents two principal challenges. First, because all products eventually decline, the firm must find new products to replace ageing ones (the problem of new-product development). Second, the firm must understand how its products age and adapt its marketing strategies as products pass through life-cycle stages (the problem of product life-cycle, strategies). We therefore look initially at the problem of finding and developing new products, and then at the challenge of managing them successfully over their life cycles. Innovation and New-Product Development: Given the rapid changes in taste, technology and competition, a company cannot rely solely on its existing products to sustain growth or to maintainà profitability. The firm can hope to maintain market and profit performance only by continuous product innovation. Product innovation encompasses a variety of product development activities product improvement, development of entirely new ones, and extensions that increase the range or number of lines of product the firm can offer. Product innovations are not to be confused with inventions. The latter are a new technology or product which may or may not deliver benefits to customers. An innovation is defined as an idea, product or piece of technology that has been developed and marketed to customers who perceive it as novel or new. We may call it a process of identifying, creating and delivering new-product values or benefits that were not offered before in the marketplace. In this chapter we look specifically at new products as opposed to value creation through marketing actions (such as product/brand repositioning, segmentation of current markets). We also need to distinguish between obtaining new products through acquisition by buying a whole company, a patent or a licence to produce someone elses product and through new-product development in the companys own research and development department. As the costs of developing and introducing major new products have climbed, many large companies have decided to acquire existing brands rather than to create new ones. Other firms have saved money by copying competitors brands or by reviving old brands. These routes can contribute to a firms growth and have both advantages and limitations. In this chapter, we are mainly concerned with how businesses create and market new products. By new products we mean original products, product improvements, pnxhict modifications and new brands that the firm develops through its own research and development efforts. Risks and Returns Jri Innovation Innovation can be very risky for a number of reasons: 1. New-product development is an expensive affair it cost Tate Lyle around à £150 million to develop a new sugar substitute; pharmaceutical firms spend an average of .à £100-50 million to develop a new drug; while developing a super-jumbo project could cost billions. 2. New-product development takes time. The pharmaeeudeals division lost about à £200 million on the drug, which cost nearly à £100 million to develop over a period of 12 years, and about S20 million was spent on promoting and marketing it. 3. Unexpected delays in development are also a problem. History is littered with grand pioneering engineering projects which have failed to satisfy the original expectations of bankers, investors and politicians. The Seikan rail tunnel, connecting the island of Hokkaido to mainland Japan, was completed 14 years late and billions of pounds over budget; the S10 billion cost of the Channel tunnel, which opened on 6 May ] 994, a year later than originally planned, is more than double the à £4,8 billion forecast in 1987. 4. The new-product success record is not encouraging either. New products continue to fail at a disturbing rate. One recent study estimated that new consumer packaged goods (consisting mostly of line extensions) fail at a rate of 80 per cent. The same high failure rate appears to afflict new financial products and services, such as credit cards, insurance plans and brokerage services. Another study found that about 33 per cent of new industrial products fail at launch. Gertrude and Helen: Wantonness in the Trojan War and Hamlet à à à à Hamlet is the melancholy Dane; Claudius, the smiling villain. Polonius is the oily courtier; Horatio, the loyal friend. Most of the characters in Hamlet are well defined and unambiguous; the character of Gertrude, however, presents us with many ambiguities and difficulties. Some critics see her as "well-meaning but shallow and feminine, in the pejorative sense of the word: incapable of any sustained rational process, superficial and flighty" (Heilbrun 10), while others see her as a stronger character, cool and calculating. The play presents many aspects of Gertrude's character ambiguously. Janet Adelman writes, à Given her centrality in the play, it is striking how little we know about Gertrude; even the extent of her involvement in the murder of her first husband is left unclear....The ghost accuses her at least indirectly of adultery and incest...but he never accuses her of nor exonerates her from the murder. For the ghost, as for Hamlet, her chief crime is her uncontrolled sexuality; that is the object of their moral revulsion, a revulsion as intense as anything directed toward the murderer Claudius. But the Gertrude we see is not quite the Gertrude they see. And when we see her in herself, apart from their characterizations of her, we tend to see a woman more muddled than actively wicked; even her famous sensuality is less apparent than her conflicted solicitude both for her new husband and for her son....Even her death is not quite her own to define. Is it a suicide designed to keep Hamlet from danger by dying in his place?...Muddled, fallible, fully human, she seems ultimately to make t he choice that Hamlet would have her make. But even here she does not speak clearly; her character remains relatively closed to us (Adelman 15-16). à In spite of the many ambiguities of Gertrude's character, one of her chief characteristics is wantonness, and like Helen of Troy, Gertrude's wantonness led to tragedy. Wantonness-a word that is little in use nowadays-suggests three characteristics: luxuriously rank extravagance, lack of discipline, and lustfulness. The treatment of Gertrude's character in Hamlet supports the argument that her chief fault is wantonness, for these three characteristics can be seen in her character. à The first characteristic, luxuriousness or extravagance, is not directly stated in the play but can be inferred from the actions of Gertrude. One possible reason for her remarriage after King Hamlet's death is a desire to maintain her position as queen, with all its luxury and comfort.

There are cilia in her trachea that is moving mucus up from the lungs. When the mucus becomes abundant it triggers the cough reflex. C)Which structures found in the terminal bronchioles and alveoli normally would protect Cariââ¬â¢s lungs from infectious pathogens and particulate matter? There are macrophages found in the terminal bronchioles and alveoli that normally would protect Cariââ¬â¢s lungs from infectious pathogens and particulate matter. My Adventure
My Traveling Adventure The wind hummed past my head, and I noticed off to my side that the sky was starting to clear and that the water surrounding me was becoming a brighter shade of blue. The features of my destination were quickly becoming more distinguishable with each second that passed. Only fifteen minutes before, the features coming into view had appeared as small white dots across the horizon. Looking at my small digital watch, I noticed that the time was 3:45 p. m. , five minutes away from the island of Islesboro. The voyage across Penobscot Bay to Islesboro was one of excitement for me.The excursion to Islesboro started in the coastal town of Lincolnville, Maine. Waiting in the parking lot of the Lobster Pound Restaurant, I frequently saw young children frolicking across the sandy Lincolnville Beach off of Route 1. The smell of freshly cooked seafood and salty sea air mixed together while I sat on one of the bucolic wooden benches along the shore. The Margaret Chase Smith, the Maine State Ferry Service's ship that ventured to Islesboro and back, quickly docked at the end of a long wooden pier strewn with barnacles.The ferry navigated back and forth between eight monstrous black rubber pads jutting out from the water until it finally halted. The rusty metal ramp lowered onto the deck of the ship as cars started their loud engines, intruding upon the tranquility of the scene. My grandfather and I cautiously walked onto the ship after all the outgoing cars had departed. We gave the attendant our tickets and then watched the cars behind us drive onto the ferry like young children following their grade school teacher.After rushing up the water-coated staircase to the observation deck, I instinctively ran over to one of the large, four-foot windows in the observation room. My grandfather approached me and lifted up the heavy glass window. I loved feeling the cool sea breeze rush past me. As a child, I adored scavenger hunts, and the zenith of my voyage was when I rushed up to the ship's fire plan document displayed for general viewing above the ship's main water fountain. I searched the ship with my grandfather for all of the fire extinguishers, returned to the map to observe if there were any that I ad missed, and then journeyed again to find the unnoticed extinguishers. I proceeded to do the same for the life preservers, life jackets, and even the water hoses. My grandfather, waiting at the front of the observation room, assisted me up the stairs to the upper deck; by that time, enough time had passed so that the trip was almost complete. The top level of the ship was less active than any other place on the ship. Few people had the courage to stay on the windy, cold deck above the observation rooms. The only sound on the third level was the rumbling thunder of the electrical motor escaping from the captain's chamber.An unpleasant metal chain bearing the simple ââ¬Å"CREW ONLYâ⬠sign guarded the white cabin. I had found it to be an ideal location to take panoramic pictures of the surroundings. Focusing on the horizon, one could obtain a perfect picture of nearby Mt. Battie in Camden or the Islesboro lighthouse. It was also an outstanding place to grasp the railings and look over the side of the ship, noticing an occasional whitecap or piece of driftwood floating in the overall calm sea. Another of my favorite locations on the ship was standing at the bow of the ferry, clutching in my hands the rusty metal chain barricading the exit.From this site, I was able to see everything directly in front of the ship and view the entire Islesboro dock as it rapidly approached. It had been from this location where I spotted a porpoise emerging from the bright blue ocean depths; I had also observed an enormous oil tanker voyaging up the bay to its port in the town of Searsport, fifteen miles north. The tanker's figure loomed like a rain cloud over the horizon in front of the boat; as we approached, we were able to ide ntify the major features of its cargo.Nearing the port at Islesboro, I smiled as I looked up at my grandfather. The first landmark I noticed was the Grindle Point Lighthouse. We had made a pledge to each other to see as many Maine lighthouses as possible during our years together. The green and red Grindle Point Light attracted visitors who could journey up the stairs to the source of the light. Continuing to stand at the bow of the ship, I saw the residents and visitors to the island desiring a ride back to the mainland. The large rubber hands of the dock led the boat into its proper position to unload.The ride over to the island of Islesboro had been exciting for me throughout my life. It was very meaningful to me because it had always been something I enjoyed doing with my grandfather. Of the many voyages we had embarked upon, the Islesboro trip epitomized all of the experiences we enjoyed doing together. I have traveled on many boats as I have become older, such as the Bluenose to Nova Scotia and the Steamship Authority's ferry to Nantucket Island, but none have had more of an impact on me than my first ferry ride on the Margaret Chase Smith.
